Your support plays a powerful role in including people who are incarcerated into the reading community. Your donations will provide valuable contributions to community members on the inside.
The Bronx Defenders (BxD) for over 25 years has used a holistic perspective in defending justice-involved community members. A holistic defense is the assembly of support from not only attorneys but also from social workers, parent advocates, policy and community organizers, and housing advocates. Through this collective engagement with a community member, we amplify their humanity within the eyes of the courts.
The legal process is already challenging and complex, but the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic made the experience still harder to work through. Any supports that can make it within carceral walls have become much more consequential in keeping folks connected to community. The reading materials that will be received through Word Up will be crucial and appreciated.
