Join us for a virtual launch event for Big Apple Diaries written and illustrated by Alyssa Bermudez (on sale August 17) in conversation with artist and author Remy Lai. For fans of Hey Kiddo! and New Kid, Big Apple Diaries is a diary-style graphic memoir about a half Puerto Rican, half white New Yorker who doodles her way through middle school—until the September 11, 2001, terrorist attack leaves her wondering if she can ever be a kid again.
Based entirely on Alyssa’s childhood diaries from the time, Big Apple Diaries highlights the resilience and community of New Yorkers amid adversity, but also is a universal coming of age read tackling themes of race and identity, as well as the pressures of trying to fit in, experiencing big changes, and navigating where to go next.
Alyssa Bermudez is a born and bred New Yorker living down under in Tasmania! She studied illustration and animation at the Fashion Institute of Technology for undergraduate and graduate courses. As an author, illustrator, and art teacher for students aged 5-75+, she strives to put the KA-POW into stories and learning, while representing children of diverse backgrounds. Her illustrations can be found on fabric and fashion, in magazines, books or even on stage! She is obsessed with dogs, books, live sketching, mountain biking, traveling and keeping plants alive.
Remy Lai studied fine arts, with a major in painting and drawing. She was born in Indonesia, grew up in Singapore, and currently lives in Brisbane, Australia, where she writes and draws stories for kids with her two dogs by her side.
