Monthly Highbridge Trail Clean-Up & Poetry Share

Saturday, May 27, 2023 - 11:00am to 1:00pm
Meet at Word Up Community Bookshop
2113 Amsterdam Ave.
New York, NY 10032

Word Up is a community trail maintainer in partnership with the NYC Parks Department's Super Steward Program. In 2021, we adopted the southern Old Croton Aqueduct Trail.

Our collective members have organized this event to get our community out into this beautiful space, keep it safe and accessible for our neighborhood, and encourage others to get involved in the stewardship of this area moving forward. We will be meeting at Word Up at 11am, then proceeding as a group to Highbridge Park to share poetry (and snacks). After that, we will hike our section of the Old Croton Aqueduct Trail, cleaning up any trash we find as we go. Sharps-removal trained volunteers will be present to handle any unfriendly debris.

Volunteers will identify and remove garbage in heavily-trafficked areas of the park. Tools (grabbers, trash bags, and gloves) will be provided. Please wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes and dress for the weather. Bring water and a snack if you wish! Walking will be on a paved and unpaved forest trail.

This month we'll also be sharing each other's poetry!

When: Saturday, May 27th, 11am-1pm (Every last Saturday of the month)

Where: Highbridge Park, Old Croton Aqueduct Trail

Meeting at: Word Up Community Bookshop/Librería Comunitaria

Debris (garbage and recycling) we may encounter and pick up:

  • Plastic and glass bottles

  • snack wrappers, plastic bags, other soft plastic wrappers

  • used needles, broken glass, and other sharp objects***

  • old clothing, left behind devices, broken umbrellas, etc.

** With the help of On Point NYC/NYHRE, Word Up has trained volunteers to pick up sharp objects such as needles and broken glass. A previously trained volunteer will be at this clean up to assist with this sort of debris.
