One Crazy Summer by Rita Williams-Garcia

In this Newbery Honor novel, New York Times bestselling author Rita Williams-Garcia tells the story of three sisters who travel to Oakland, California, in 1968 to meet the mother who abandoned them. A pre-amble to the summer, we'll be reading this favorite of facilitator Lenny!

City Girls by Loretta Lopez

Readers of Lucky Broken GirlHurricane Child, and The House on Mango Street, will love this debut middle grade novel about finding sanctuary with friends who understand the enormous changes life can throw at you when you're 11. We hope that our participants will enjoy reflecting on that period and exploring the worlds of Elisa, Lucia, and Alice.

Brooms by Jasmine Walles, Teo Duvall

"Brooms" is a heart-pounding graphic novel soaring with magic, friendship, and rebellion. It's a Fast and the Furious with broomsticks instead of cars, a historical spotlight on struggles silenced by time, and a celebration of the indomitable spirit that dares to defy the odds. Buckle up, witches and dreamers, for this ride is  about to take flight.

Everything Sad is Untrue by Daniel Nayeri

A sprawling, evocative, and groundbreaking autobiographical novel told in the unforgettable and hilarious voice of a young Iranian refugee. It is a powerfully layered novel that poses the questions: Who owns the truth? Who speaks it? Who believes it?
