This November, join local cartoonists and educators Sharon Lee de la Cruz and Ellen Lindner for a series of fun, free comics lectures! Through this series, you will learn how best-selling author Sara Varon has documented COVID life in NYC with diary comics (11/8), talk agents and book proposals with editor and graphic novelist Jonah Newman (11/1), hear political cartoonist Niccolo Pizarro’s thoughts on making topical comics in the fastest-moving news cycle in history (11/22), and listen to memoirist and educator Breena Nuñez talk about their work on the boundaries between the personal and the political (11/18.)

ABOUT THE FEATURED ARTISTS

Jonah Newman is a cartoonist and editor based in Brooklyn. He’s the author and illustrator of the historical fiction webcomic Empire On Edge, many short self-published comics, and the young adult graphic novel Out of Left Field, forthcoming from Little, Brown Books for Young Readers. He’s also an editor at Scholastic, working on picture books and graphic novels including Dav Pilkey’s blockbuster Dog Man series. When he’s not creating, editing, or reading graphic novels, you might find Jonah binge-listening to history podcasts, petting his two sons (who are cats), or getting way too invested in his fantasy baseball team.

Jonah Newman es un caricaturista y editor con base en Brooklyn. Es el autor e ilustrador del webcomic de ficción histórica Empire On Edge, muchos cortos auto-publicados y la novela gráfica para jóvenes adultos Out of Left Field, de próxima aparición en Little, Brown Books for Young Readers. Sara Varon is a graphic novelist and children’s book author/illustrator living in Brooklyn. Her books include Robot Dreams, Odd Duck, Bake Sale, New Shoes, and My Pencil and Me. They have received many accolades - among others, Odd Duck was selected by Kirkus Reviews as one of the Best Children’s Books of 2013, Bake Sale was named a YALSA Great Graphic Novel for 2012, and Robot Dreams was on Oprah’s Kids’ Reading List in 2008. Niccolo Pizarro is a pinoy cartoonist from the borough of Queens in New York City. He makes comics about politics, race, baseball, and his (fictionalized) everyday experiences. Breena Nuñez is a cartoonist and professor from the San Francisco Bay Area. She creates comics that center on the nuances of existing as an AfroCentral American person from the U.S. as well as using comics to articulate what queerness means to her as well. You can some of Breena's journalism and memoir comics on The Nib, The New Yorker: Daily Shouts and anthologies like Tales From La Vida: A Latinx Comics Anthology, Drawing Power: Women's Stories of Sexual Violence (Eisner Nominated), Harassment, and Survival and Be Gay, Do Comics!

Breena Núñez es una caricaturista y profesora del área de la bahía de San Francisco.
