In times like these, when our world is hurting, it helps to feed it, care for it, and love it with food.
The Dynamite Shop is partnering with chefs and charities for a series of free monthly online cooking classes aimed at bringing people together to cook dishes from a variety of voices. Each time we meet, a guest chef will teach us their favorite dish to share and talk with us about a social justice group that’s meaningful to them. We will donate $1 to that group for every family that cooks with us.
For the November edition of the Dynamite Community Kitchen, we’re thrilled to cook and chat with the amazing Alejandra Ramos: television host, Today Show contributor, chef, food writer and creator of the award-winning blog Always Order Dessert.
On November 15 from 4:00pm - 5:30pm EST, Alejandra will teach us to make Asopao de Garbanzos, a classic Puerto Rican rice and chickpea stew that’s her ultimate comfort food.
For her charity, Alejandra has chosen Word Up, a multilingual, general-interest community bookshop and arts space in Washington Heights, New York City, with a mission of preserving and building a neighborhood in which all residents help each other to live better informed and more expressive lives, using books as an instrument of reciprocal education and exchange. Word Up is run by volunteers who host readings, concerts, screenings, art exhibitions, talks and workshops, community meetings, and other initiatives for kids and adults -- including The People’s Fridge, a communal refrigerator where people can leave food they don’t need or take food if they’re hungry.
Please join us! We founded The Dynamite Shop as a place for youth to focus on building community, celebrating diversity and supporting charity through food. We are excited to bring this mission to a larger audience, and without cost, so please help us spread the word. There can never be too many cooks in The Dynamite Community Kitchen!
Here’s how it works:
● SIGN UP! This online event is free and for all ages. (We always recommend kids are supervised in the kitchen.) When you register, you’ll be able to make a donation to Word Up, if you wish.
● PRINT the recipe and shop for ingredients. Want to make it to donate as well as to enjoy with your family? Double it!
● LOG ON to Zoom from 4:00pm - 5:30pm EST Sunday, November 15th. (You’ll get your Zoom link when you register.) We’ll take attendance and make our donation public.
