As part of its "Documentales sociales en las Américas/Social Documentaries in the Americas" series, Word Up presents a screening of TÚ Y YO (2015, República Dominicana/Dominican Republic, N. Cabral & O. Estrada, 86 min).
The Mrs., a widow, and Aridia, a young maid, live together in a house filled with orchids in the center of Santo Domingo. Aridia cleans, the Mrs. gardens, and when work is slow, they can share some gossip. Sometimes, the atmosphere gets tense before they can laugh again. Through an intimate portrait of two women, Tú y yo explores class, race, and the relationships that push against those categories. // La Señora, una viuda, y Aridia, una mucama, viven juntas en una casa llena de orquídeas en el centro de Santo Domingo. Aridia limpia, La Señora trabaja en el jardín, y a veces intercambian chismes. A veces, el ambiente se pone más tenso, pero de pronto se ríen de nuevo. A través de un retrato íntimo de dos mujeres, Tú y yo investiga los temas de clase, raza, y las relaciones que niegan esas categorías.
