What are the greatest threats to freedom of expression in the United States today? Join us for an event on censorship, surveillance, and freedom of expression with Heidi Boghosian, author of I Have Nothing to Hide, and Andy Lee Roth, co-editor of Project Censored’s State of the Free Press 2022. Heidi Boghosian and Andy Lee Roth will lead a discussion of how censorship and surveillance undermine freedom of expression—and what we can do to counter these threats. Drawing on their most recent books, Boghosian, a data privacy expert, and Roth, a sociologist who studies news, critically examine a handful of basic ways that censorship and surveillance intertwine to limit public debate, fuel intolerance, and amplify pressures to conform. This event will be moderated by Veronica Santiago Liu, founder of Word Up Community Bookshop / Librería Comunitaria.

Boghosian and Roth’s key message is that none of these depressing, counter-democratic outcomes is inevitable. Instead, by organizing together, first to inform themselves and then to act, communities can effectively resist censorship and surveillance, and become champions of fearless speech in these fateful times.

ABOUT THE BOOKS

I Have Nothing to Hide An accessible guide that breaks down the complex issues around mass surveillance and data privacy and explores the negative consequences it can have on individual citizens and their communities. Attorney and data privacy expert Heidi Boghosian unpacks widespread myths around the seemingly innocuous nature of surveillance, sets the record straight about what government agencies and corporations do with our personal data, and offers solutions to take back our information. “I Have Nothing to Hide” addresses the misconceptions around tradeoffs between privacy and security, citizen spying, and the ability to design products with privacy protections.

Project Censored’s State of the Free Press 2022 At a time when disinformation, consolidation of corporate media, and division along party lines are at an all-time high in the United States, Project Censored's mission to uncover the most important but underreported stories of the previous year is more important than ever. State of the Free Press 2022 continues Project Censored's long tradition of publicizing the most important stories ignored or obscured by the mainstream news establishment, exposing the lies and spin of corporate Junk Food News (frivolous stories that distract the public from actual news) and News Abuse (important stories covered in ways that undermine public understanding) while promoting the best independent journalism, research, and activism.
